Nina Schmidt

Schmidt, a resident of Clayton since 2006, was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she studied graphic design. Later she worked in graphic design and web development.

She and her husband moved to the United States in 2005, the result of a job opportunity for him within NNE Pharmaplan, a Danish engineering consulting company. Since their move to Clayton, Schmidt has been a stay-at-home mother, doing free-lance graphic design work, volunteering and taking more time for her painting.

Presently, she is working on a series of abstract paintings, which she likes because it allows her to work more intuitively.

“When it comes to painting, I like to be spontaneous,”

she said, because in graphic design, she finds herself “micro-managing every pixel on my computer screen.”

Her inspiration is music, nature, beauty, rhythm.

To her, a piece of art is good when it’s strong and clear.

“It’s a lot like music; sometimes it’s a few simple notes, and sometimes it’s more elaborate.”

Schmidt studied at Copenhagen Technical College, at the Danish School of Media and Journalism, and at Thorstedlund Artschool in Denmark. She also has taken several drawing and painting workshops.

Clayton resident Nina Schmidt will headline the December art exhibit at the Clayton Center Dec. 8 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
