Tammy Kaufman’s pastel landscape paintings reflect tranquil light-filled moments.
Born in southern Texas, Tammy Kaufman grew up in the Piedmont of North Carolina after traveling the United States and Europe with her family as a youngster. A former 24-hour endurance mountain bike racer, she currently resides in central North Carolina with her husband, Steve, and adopted pets, Frylie and Venus. Now retired from competitive cycling, she continues to cherish the wonders of nature through her pastoral landscape paintings, and donates the profits from all painting sales to animal charities. Though primarily self-taught as an artist, she has studied pastels with Addren Doss and Pamela Poole as well as participating in multiple online pastel courses, and continues to take classes and workshops to further her progression in the arts. She is a member of the Pastel Society of North Carolina, Southeastern Pastel Society, Oil Pastel Society, Fine Arts League of Cary and North Carolina Plein Air Painters, and is a juried Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America. Her paintings have been juried into multiple shows across North Carolina and hang in private collections throughout the United States. Her landscapes are painted as an homage to Mother Nature and envision a world sans the destructive forces of man, with scenes welcoming the viewer in as the first one to see them. It is her greatest privilege to share her love and respect for the natural world through her artwork.
Vibrant hues of sunrises and sunsets kissing flower-covered fields, soft light filtering through lacy-leafed trees and glistening across reflective waters, the stunning kaleidoscope of colors peeking through clouds and woven into snow, and the deep intensity of the night all speak softly to the listening heart. My paintings reflect tranquil light-filled moments when nature speaks with a whisper instead of a shout, inspiring my palette with that quiet voice and inviting the viewer to step nearer, taking a closer look at the tiniest details found in even the most expansive vistas. Due to the intimate connection they offer of artist’s hand directly to painting surface, pastels are my instinctive medium of choice, using luminous pigments created from the earth itself.
